Essay on published journal article in Epistemics in Science, Engineering and Technology (ESET),Vol.1, No.3, 2011, pp. 89-94.

 Author’s affiliations: Opeyemi Joshua (Department of Building Technology, Covenant University,Canaanland, Ota. Ogun state) and Philip O. Lawal (Department of QuantitySurveying, Caleb University, Lagos state).

Article title: Cost optimization of sandcrete blocks through partial replacement ofsand with lateritic soil.

Aim/Method: This work intends to lower the price of sandcrete blocks within Ota, Ogun state byincorporating cheaper and readily abundant material, lateritic soil, to replacemore expensive sand in the production of sandcrete block. Lateritic soil wassampled from three different locations within Ota to replace sand in sandcreteblock production and compressive strength test performed to ascertain thepermissible replacement that will not compromise the strength requirement asspecified in the Nigerian Building Code (2006). The average of the permissiblereplacements was determined and recommended to Block Molding Industries withinOta, Ogun state to adopt to lower its production cost and hence selling pricemaking housing more affordable.

Findings: This work isable to establish the average permissible replacement of sand with lateriticsoil is 20% which lower the material cost by 11.89%.

Originality:This work is anextract from my Masters (M.Sc) theses with the lab experiments performed andsandcrete block material-cost analyzed by first and second authors respectively.
